Washita Battlefield
We altered our route home from Colorado to include this National Historic site, our first National Park visit in Oklahoma.
During the winter of 1868, Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer led a surprise attack on the Cheyennes camped near the Washita River. Many Cheyennes were killed, including women, children and also Chief Black Kettle. Ironically, Black Kettle had been known as a good man who tried to keep his people safe by working towards peace.
