Fundy Coastal Route - Cape Enrage

Posted on August 4th, 2011

Our second stop along New Brunswick's Fundy Coastal Route was at Cape Enrage. This will be the first of what we hope to be many lighthouse sightings. The construction of a lighthouse at this location had long been discussed, but was delayed due to indecision as to whether it should be built here or across the bay at Apple River in Nova Scotia.

In 1838 a petition was signed by local residents and sea captains championing the Cape Enrage site. Their reasons were: 1) In winter ice first formed along the Nova Scotia coast, thus forcing ships close to the New Brunswick coast, 2) there was more traffic along the New Brunswick coast, 3) Cape Enrage jutted out into the bay almost halfway to Nova Scotia and 4) the waters were more dangerous along the New Brunswick coast.

In 1840 the lighthouse was built at Cape Enrage.
