October 2011 Road Trip Day 23 Hillsboro to Baker City

From Hillsboro, which is just west of Portland, we started our trek back east. Previous trips took us through the Columbia Gorge on I-84. This time, we took US 26 to Oregon 7. It was a gorgeous day. Early on we got a dramatic view of Mt. Hood.
Our one stop of the day was late afternoon at John Day Fossil Beds NM - Painted Hills Unit, near Mitchell, OR. We had heard of this place at our photo workshop. We were impressed by the the smooth contours and brilliant colors of the hills. The red is from oxidized, rusty iron minerals. The black marks are rich with manganese, whereas the gold is a mix of oxidized iron and magnesium. Below are three of our 100 shots of the painted hills:
