Vanishing tent

Posted on March 5th, 2012

When we returned home from our February camping trip to Goose Island SP, our tent was wet from a night of constant wind swept, salt water spray.

We decided to erect the tent on our back patio, under the pergola. As there was a nice breeze, we decided to "secure" it with two bungee cords and leave it overnight. We checked it at 10pm and all was well.

At 7am the next morning, I opened the blinds to the patio and - you guessed it - NO TENT! Several possibilites were evaluated and disgarded, in favor of it probably just blowing away. I immediately and frantically searched the following:

  • Our back yard
  • The backyard of our neighbor to the west
  • The backyard of our neighbor to the east
  • The park beyond our back fence
All with no success.

After some time, I started searching in the front yard, knowing that the tent would have had to get airborne and "fly" over the house. A few steps from our front door, I found my first solid clue - a bright red bungee cord was laying on the sidewalk. I knew then that the tent had found its way to the front of the house.
The search continued with walks up and down our street. No luck. My search was then expanded to the street that dead ends in front of our house. Some four houses and 300 yards from its starting point, I found the tent, two of its three poles and the remaining bungee cord. Returning to our house, I found the third and final tent pole
We set the tent up one more time to inspect for damage. Suffice it to say, our tent of 15 years has been retired in favor of a new, larger one as seen below.

That wind must have been something else. Oh well, good excuse to get a new one! I'm surprised you were able to find it not all ripped up.

The new one looks like it's a lighter material - easier to manage. Have fun.
Very interesting to read of your travels.
